Volunteer With Us

Sunset Zoo needs YOU! We have competitive volunteer programs for teens, retirees, and everything in between! Whether you are interested in gaining education experience, getting more involved with your community, or gaining experience assisting in the care of animals, Sunset Zoo has a program for you.

Adult Opportunities

Docents

Do you have a passion for conservation and education? Do you want to connect with your community in meaningful ways? As a docent, you will have the opportunity to promote the mission of Sunset Zoo and engage in lifelong learning with Wonder Spots, special event support, awareness day messaging, and more! Information Nights are held once a semester for interested, prospective volunteers.

Husbandry Aides

Are you looking for career experience caring for animals, or are you passionate about animals and their welfare? As a husbandry aide, you will assist keeper staff in providing for the well-being of the ambassador animals in our care at Sunset Zoo. We have a limited number of Husbandry Aide spots available, and recruit for new volunteers as needed. Information Nights are held once a semester for interested, prospective volunteers.

Youth Opportunities

Junior Zookeepers (JZK)

So, do you want to be a zookeeper or just think animals are the coolest? The Junior Zookeeper (JZK) program gives high school students a behind-the-scenes look at the zoo world! Get hands-on experience alongside zookeepers, educators, and grounds teams while you engage with guests and build skills that will set you up for success—whether your future is in zoos or beyond. If you’re passionate about animals and ready to dive in, this is your chance! This year-long program is for you!

 Program Logistics:

  • Participants must be 14-17 years old at the start of the program (June 2nd).
  • Participants may participate if they turn 18 during the program.
  • Participants have a goal of completing 80 hours of service in the program year (June-May). They must complete these hours to attend the end of season trip.
  • JZK shifts are available Monday-Saturday during the summer and Saturdays throughout the school year.
  • Participants are responsible for bringing their own boots, lunch (if staying for the whole day), and reusable water bottle.
  • Participants will be provided with 2 shirts.
  • Spots are limited and applications do not guarantee a spot. Applicants must participate in group and individual interviews.
  • There is a $125 fee associated with accepted JZK participants. If this fee is a challenge for your family, please email zooed@cityofmhk.com for support.

Application CLOSED:

  • This competitive program accepts application in March of 2026.
