Black & White Colobus Monkey

Scientific Name: Colobus guereza kikuyuensis

Almost three-quarters of their tail is covered by a large tuft. They also lack a thumb, which may be an adaptation to allow for quick movements through the trees.

Sunset Zoo's resident colobus monkeys are Bobby (male), Azizi (female), and Kivuli (female).

  • Size: head-to-body length 18 to 28 inches, tail length 20 to 40 inches with males being slightly larger than females
  • Weight: 17 to 32 pounds
  • Diet: Occasionally eat fruit, but primarily tree leaves
  • Habitat: Adaptable to any tropical wooded habitat, including rainforest, dry forest, open woodlands and river valleys
  • Range in the Wild: Across equatorial Africa, from Congo east to Ethiopia

Conservation Status

Listed as Least Concern - Live in largely protected areas; very abundant within its limited range.
