  2. Walk & Talk: Autumn Wildflowers with Jeff Taylor

    September 21, 2019, 8:00 AM - 10:00 AM @ Konza Prairie Nature Trail

    Explore parts of the Konza Prairie Biological Station that are not available to the general public. We will see and identify many native tallgrass plants with Konza Prairie LTER botanist and bison herd manager Jeff Taylor. Jeff has been working at Konza Prairie for 12 years and has an interest in floristics and plant-herbivore interactions. We will meet at the Konza Prairie Stone Barn. Remember your comfortable walking shoes with closed toes and insect repellent. This event will be held rain or shine unless deemed unsafe. Pre-registration is required by September 20 at 5:00 PM.   3. Exhibit Opening: Zoo in You: The Human Microbiome

    Zoo in You: The Human Microbiome allows guests to explore this fascinating and complex world inside us that is our microbiome—a dynamic, adaptable and delicately balanced ecosystem like any other found in nature. Learn who our constant microbial companions are, where they live, how diverse they are and in what ways scientists are discovering just how important they are to our personal health. Visitors are invited to explore this vibrant world through engaging, interactive components including a marble maze, green screen technology, microscopes, puzzles and more. Eat Well, Play Well is a hands-on science exhibit, helping children and families discover nutrition and fitness and the science of making healthy choices. Visitors will discover what an appropriate serving size looks like, see firsthand what it takes to burn off calories, test their flexibility and balance, review the latest clinical research and realize that they can reduce their risk of disease with healthy choices.

  4. 1918: The Great War & the Terrible Flu Lecture

    September 24, 2019, 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM @ FHDC

    Historian Jed Dunham will compress the complex and harrowing story of the great influenza outbreak of 1918 into a straightforward narrative using his own original research into the outbreak. Dunham will root this story in the local context, focusing on Nurse Battey and the Manhattan, KS fight against influenza. Jed Dunham received his Bachelor of Arts in Advertising from Kansas State University in 1996. He serves as Communications Director for S.A.V.E. Farm (Service member Agricultural Vocational Education) which is dedicated to helping transitioning veterans find purpose, education and employment within the agricultural industry. He developed the Kansas State Pandemic Team which utilized a multi-discipline approach to study the 1918 Influenza Pandemic which resulted in locating the source point for the 1918 pandemic and new avenues towards a universal flu vaccine. This event is free and open to the public.
