Manhattan, Kan. – The Flint Hills Discovery Center (FHDC) is excited to announce the new addition of an Augmented Reality Sand Table that will debut this Spring Break (March 9-13). The community is invited to visit the FHDC from 10 AM-5 PM during that week to experience this new interactive display for the first time.
Funding for the AR Sand Table was made possible by generous donations from community members who attended the Flint Hills Discovery Center Foundation’s fundraising event, Bison, Beef & Bourbon. The event was held in November 2019.
On Friday, February 28, the Flint Hills Discovery Center Foundation hosted a dedication event to thank the donors and allow them to be the first to try out the new AR Sand Table.
The 40” wide x 30” deep x 8” high wooden box is filled with fine white sand. Guests can mold the sand by hand and watch the landscapes come alive with an elevation color map and topographic contour lines. Build mountains, volcanoes, rivers and more. This hands-on display encourages guests of all ages to get creative and build landscapes big and small.
“The Augmented Reality Sand Table is a truly immersive way to learn about landscapes and the world around us,” said Stephen Bridenstine, Curator of Education. “We couldn’t have done this without the support of our generous community members. Their financial gifts continue to make special exhibits and experiences like this possible.”
The AR Sand Table will be open to the public only during select times. A full schedule will be announced soon.
