Manhattan, Kan. – Westar Energy has installed two new electric vehicle charging stations in the parking lot adjacent to the Flint Hills Discovery Center (FHDC).
This project was presented to the City of Manhattan Public Works staff and then taken to the City Commission for approval. The project was unanimously approved by the Commission.
Westar Energy and the City of Manhattan worked together to decide on a location for the charging stations. The FHDC was an easy choice, because of its energy efficiency and environmentally friendly values.
“Offering the convenience of electric vehicle charging lets EV drivers know they are appreciated and fits with the Flint Hills Discovery Center’s focus on sustainability,” said Chuck Caisley, senior vice president of marketing and public affairs at Westar Energy.
The new charging stations at the FHDC are part of an expansion that will nearly double the number of EV charging stations available in Westar Energy’s service area, all powered 100% by locally sourced renewable energy. The network of charging stations provides convenient opportunities for EV drivers to top off their charge while going about regular activities.
“This installation also falls into our mission as being a LEED certified building and gives us the opportunity to educate about energy use,” said Susan Adams, director of the Flint Hills Discovery Center.
To learn more about this project, Westar Energy representatives will be in attendance at the FHDC’s Flint Hills Festival on Saturday, May 11 from 10 AM-5 PM. Representatives will walk guests through how to use the charging stations and answer any questions they may have.
