Manhattan, Kan. – The Flint Hills Discovery Center (FHDC) has hired Jurina Watts as its new Volunteer Coordinator. Watts assumed her position on February 11.
Watts grew up in Texas, but has lived in Kansas for over 25 years. She graduated from Fort Hays State University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. Watts then went on to graduate from Central Michigan University with a Master of Science in Administration with a concentration in Human Resources Management.
Watts has several years of experience in customer service, administration and program management. Prior to working at the FHDC, she has had the opportunity to work several rewarding jobs in a wide range of fields.
“The most rewarding, memorable and fulfilling job that I have had the opportunity to work was as a mental health educator and director of a state wide 24/7 crisis help-line. As the crisis line director, I worked with a volunteer staff of trained crisis specialists in assisting and helping those who called the crisis line,” Watts said.
On staff, Watts coordinates volunteer recruitment and is responsible for the management of the volunteer program. The FHDC has more than 65 active volunteers that assist with special events, group visits, education programs and more.
“I have inherited an awesome group of volunteers. My goal is to increase the overall volunteer base by 15 to 20 percent within a year,” Watts said.
In her free time, Watts’ hobbies include: nurturing her houseplants, reading, research, learning piano and training for 5k walks/not runs.
