[ARCHIVED] Where is Miracle Max?

Miracle max behind the scenes

Miracle Max is recovering from surgery on his ankle. A while ago, zookeepers noticed that Max was limping. After a check-up, the veterinarians from Kansas State University found an old injury to his left ankle. To help him heal, they performed surgery on May 14 to put in a metal plate. This plate helps protect his ankle so he doesn’t hurt it again.

After surgery, Max stayed inside to rest. He needed a clean, dry space where he could heal safely. Things were going well, but on June 6, Keeper Denise saw Max limping again. X-rays showed that one of the screws near the plate had caused a hairline fracture. This might have happened because Max moved around too much or because his bone was already weak.

Now, Miracle Max is resting in a smaller indoor room
to keep him safe, healthy, and healing properly. He needs a few more months to heal before he can go back outside with Abigail. Until then, the zoo’s vets and keepers are giving him lots of care and love.

We all hope Max feels better soon!
