Walk & Talk: Mount Mitchell History and Heritage

Dive deep into history during this special guided tour of the Mount Mitchell Heritage Prairie. Hear the story of Captain William Mitchell and the Beecher Bible and Rifle Colony, a group of abolitionists from Connecticut who played a vital role in the Kansas/Missouri Border War in 1856. Learn about his role as conductor and stationmaster on the westernmost route of the Underground Railroad, which runs through the property Tour guide Michael Stubbs is president of the Mount Mitchell Prairie Guards, the nonprofit group whose mission is to preserve the Park’s prairie, and tell the many stories this special place has witnessed. Pre-registration is required by April 30 at 5:00 PM. Register online, by calling 785-587-2726, or in person at the Flint Hills Discovery Center. Each session is limited to 20 participants.
