Winter/Spring 2020 Adventure Camps

Pre-Registration Required

All participants must pre-register for each session. Pre-register online, by phone at 785-587-2726 or in person at the Flint Hills Discovery Center. Registration is open now.

Before You Begin Your Adventure

  • Complete emergency release and permission forms and return them to the FHDC Education Department on or before your first program of the season. Click here to download forms.
  • All parents should read the Adventure Camp Parent Handbook prior to dropping their child off at camp. Parents failing to follow the rules and regulations outlined in this handbook may result in a child’s removal from camp.

Camp Locations

During the school year, Adventure Camps are offered at both the Flint Hills Discovery Center and Sunset Zoo. The grade of the child participating determines the camp location.

Camps for Grades 3-6 at Flint Hills Discovery Center

Date Class Description
February 7       Building Forces Test the reactions of different building materials and objects when we apply force. We may just drop something from a very tall height!
February 13             Who Needs Tools? Find out what people did before you could buy tools from the store. You'll even make some of your own tools to use.
February 14 Animals Through Time Our human relationships with animals have changed throughout history. Let's talk about pets, working animals and even hunting for food!
February 17 Kansas Rocks Did you know we have gemstones in Kansas? Take a close look at the fossils, rocks and amazing minerals we have right in our own backyard!
March 6 Kitchen Science Cook, boil, chill and bubble with us in the classroom as we do some kitchen science!
March 9 Fire! Why do some things explode and others just sizzle? Come find out at this fun camp where we will play with energy and learn about fire safety in the Flint Hills.
March 10 Weather in Motion Get to know the conditions that lead to severe weather here in the Flint Hills.
March 11 Bad Hair Day The wind can make or break a hair-do, depending on your style. Wear your hair anyway you please, but today's camp is about more than hair! Let's find out how wind helps humans every single day.
March 12 Downpours and Droughts Take a look at what happens with too little rain or too much rain with the help of maps and historic evidence.
March 13 Nature Meets Technology Try your skills at weather predictions and reporting at Adventure Camp!
April 10 Tallgrass Prairie Preserve Let's hop on the bus and head south to Council Grove and the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve! At Council Grove we will stop at some historic sites and stand in the shade of General Custer's Elm. After a picnic lunch, we're off to the National Park Service and Nature Conservancy's top-notch Flint Hills destination and sway with the tallgrass in the prairie. Don't miss this grand adventure with us!
