CREATED FOR THE FLINT HILLS MAP & EDUCATION PROGRAM
After brief background on what is a prairie, students read and analyze the content and writing techniques (esp. analogy) of Paul Gruchow's celebrated essay (700 words, 2 pages) describing what people can learn about their place in the human world - by looking at the prairie ecosystem as an example. Reading, organization and writing skills are emphasized.
Followup activity charting the 10 analogies plus vocabulary-building exercise.
Students will choose which of the 10 lessons they found most compelling and write a paragraph applying it to a real life situation.
