Join the Flint Hills Discovery Center, Kansas State University, and Riley County Conservation district for a memorable morning of prescribed burning. The Public Fire Workshop is your opportunity for hands-on training in this essential element of the Flint Hills.
Participants attend a required classroom session at the Discovery Center on Thursday, September 6 from 6-8pm to learn about prescribed burning and fire safety from K-State professors Carol Baldwin and Drew Rickets. Then, participate in an 80 acre prescribed burn on a following Saturday. First burn date is September 8. Make-up dates are September 15, 22, and 29. Burning is weather dependent so your patience and flexibility is requested to make this program a success.
Round trip travel from Discovery Center to burn site provided leaving at 8:00am and returning around 2:00pm. Times subject to change due to weather.
Pre-registration is required by September 4. Please register online, by calling 785-587-2726, or in person at the Flint Hills Discovery Center.
Important Event Details:
Limited to 20 guests age 12 and older; youth must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.
Participants must be capable and comfortable hiking over uneven terrain and being exposed to heat and smoke.
Participants MUST attend the required Thursday class session to take part in Saturday burn.
What to wear:
Hat or hardhat; sunglasses or goggles; natural fibers or Nomex including long sleeve shirt with collar; jeans or pants worn outside boots; leather gloves
NO steel toe boots; NO metal accessories; NO flapping or dragging clothing.
Please use sunscreen and bring a water bottle as necessary.
