Secrets of Tuttle Creek- POSTPONED

Get a behind the scenes look at the Tuttle Creek Dam with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The tour will explain why and how the dam was built. Find out how the dam is operated and the benefits it brings to the local area. On the tour you will visit Tuttle Creek dam, tower, and spillway with Natural Resource Specialist Angelia Lentz as your guide. All participants should be comfortable walking and climbing stairs. 

Special Requirements Apply to this Tour
• Participants must be able to climb multiple flights of stairs
• Due to security concerns, all participants must be US citizens

Restrictions inside the tower and spillway: 
• No Cameras
• No Cellphones
• No Bags

Round trip travel and tour are included. Tour leaves the Flint Hills Discovery Center at 8:00 AM and returns no later than 1:00 PM. No lunch is provided. Guests are encouraged to bring a re-sealable water bottle. Light snacks will be provided.

Secrets of Energy


Saturday, August 10, 8:00 AM-1:30 PM
Get a behind the scenes tour of two amazing energy destinations in our region. Your day begins with a tour of the Jeffrey Energy Center, the state’s biggest power plant. Learn how Westar Energy turns coal into electricity that runs our modern lives. The tour bus heads next to Kansas State University for a tour of the Triga Mark II Nuclear Reactor Facility. Learn how this research reactor supports academic programs and offers industrial services.

Round trip travel and tours are included. Tour leaves the Flint Hills Discovery Center at 8:00 AM and returns no later than 1:30 PM. No lunch is provided. Guests are encouraged to bring a re-sealable water bottle. Light snacks will be provided.

The follow restrictions apply to all attendees for safety and security reasons:
• Long pants and shirts with sleeves are required; no shorts or capri style pants, no sleeveless tops
• Wear comfortable closed-toe walking shoes; no sandals or high heels
• Age 8+ only; all attendees must be able to follow directions
• Must be able to climb stairs

Exploring Emporia


Saturday, September 21, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM
Experience the "Front Porch of the Flint Hills" as we travel to Emporia in Lyon County, where we will be treated to a tour of historic sites in Emporia with a step-on guide. After lunch at the famed Radius Brewing Company, we will tour the home of William Allen White and complete our day with a visit to the David Traylor Zoo. Be sure to bring your walking shoes, sense of discovery, and some spending money on this historic bus tour!

Round trip travel and tours are included. Youth under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Tour leaves the Flint Hills Discovery Center at 8:00 AM and returns no later than 5:00 PM.

Plumlee Buffalo Ranch


Saturday, September 28, 8:30 AM-12:00 PM
Join us for a morning of bison fun at the Plumlee Buffalo Ranch. You will get up close to America’s National Mammal during a 2-hour guided tour of this working Bison ranch. See a beautiful native tallgrass prairie and remnants of pioneer wagon ruts. Guests travel on a comfortable trailer making it safe and fun for the entire family.

Round trip travel and tour fees are included. Youth under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Not recommended for youth under 2. Tour leaves the Flint Hills Discovery Center at 8:30 AM and returns no later than 12:00 PM.
