Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve/Chase County


Saturday, April 27, 8:00 AM-4:30 PM
Join us for a scenic day trip to the heart of the Flint Hills. The Tallgrass Tour Bus takes you south from Manhattan to the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve where you will be treated to a guided tour of the bison pastures as well as the Spring Hill Ranch headquarters. Midway along our journey we will dine for lunch at Ad Astra, known regionally for its fine food. Our final stop will include a private tour of the Chase County Courthouse in Cottonwood Falls, where we will explore its unique history and construction.

Round trip travel and tour fees are provided. Participants are responsible for lunch fee. Youth under 18 must be accompanied by adult. Tour leaves the Flint Hills Discovery Center at 8:00 AM and returns no later than 4:30 PM.

Secrets of Tuttle Creek


Saturday, June 1, 8:00 AM-1:00 PM
Get a behind the scenes look at the Tuttle Creek Dam with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The tour will explain why and how the dam was built. Find out how the dam is operated and the benefits it brings to the local area. On the tour you will visit Tuttle Creek dam, tower, and spillway with Natural Resource Specialist Angelia Lentz as your guide. All participants should be comfortable walking and climbing stairs.

Special Requirements Apply to this Tour
• Participants must be able to climb multiple flights of stairs
• Due to security concerns, all participants must be US citizens

Restrictions inside the tower and spillway:
• No Cameras
• No Cellphones
• No Bags

Round trip travel and tour are included. Tour leaves the Flint Hills Discovery Center at 8:00 AM and returns no later than 1:00 PM. No lunch is provided. Guests are encouraged to bring a re-sealable water bottle. Light snacks will be provided.

Secrets of Manhattan


Saturday, June 22, 8:00 AM-1:30 PM
Learn the secrets to Manhattan infrastructure on this special behind-the-scenes Tallgrass Tour Bus. Begin at Manhattan Regional Airport for a tour of the terminal including the air traffic control tower. Travel next to Go Flex Air flight training school to see an airplane up close and their state of the art flight simulator. The day ends with a double dose of Public Works. Get insider tours of Manhattan’s water treatment plant and wastewater treatment facility. See where our clean water comes from and what really happens to everything that goes down the drain.

Round trip travel and tours are included. Tour leaves the Flint Hills Discovery Center at 8:00 AM and returns no later than 1:30 PM. No lunch is provided. Guests are encouraged to bring a re-sealable water bottle. Light snacks will be provided. Tour requires moderate walking and climbing stairs.

Secrets of Energy


Saturday, August 10, 8:00 AM-1:30 PM
Get a behind the scenes tour of two amazing energy destinations in our region. Your day begins with a tour of the Jeffrey Energy Center, the state’s biggest power plant. Learn how Westar Energy turns coal into electricity that runs our modern lives. The tour bus heads next to Kansas State University for a tour of the Triga Mark II Nuclear Reactor Facility. Learn how this research reactor supports academic programs and offers industrial services.

Round trip travel and tours are included. Tour leaves the Flint Hills Discovery Center at 8:00 AM and returns no later than 1:30 PM. No lunch is provided. Guests are encouraged to bring a re-sealable water bottle. Light snacks will be provided.

The follow restrictions apply to all attendees for safety and security reasons:
• Long pants and shirts with sleeves are required; no shorts or capri style pants, no sleeveless tops
• Wear comfortable closed-toe walking shoes; no sandals or high heels
• Age 8+ only; all attendees must be able to follow directions
• Must be able to climb stairs
