Adventure Camp: Evolution of Football (3rd-6th grade)
Time: 8:00am - 5:00pm

Do you know when football was first played?  Want to know more about the history of football?  Join the Flint Hills Discovery Center in an exciting experience which will involve Football: The Exhibit in the FHDC Temporary Gallery!

NEW! Adventure Camp: Experience Manhattan, the Flint Hills, and the world like never before. The Sunset Zoo and the FHDC are joining forces to provide a unique and enhanced experience for kids when USD 383 is not in session. Together, adventurers will learn about the plants and animals from their own backyard to around the world. They'll also have the chance to travel back in time to explore the history, geology, and fossils that makes their home a unique and special place. Drop off and pick up will be at the site identified for each session and changes regularly providing an opportunity for kids to explore both Sunset Zoo and FHDC on different dates. There is a maximum of 24 members; a minimum of 10. Enrollment will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Those students who are enrolled will receive confirmation by mail. Parents can drop off adventurers as early as 7:30 a.m. and pick up as late as 5:30 p.m. Registration includes morning and afternoon snacks, as well as all supplies for activities and access to exhibits. Kansas State University Day

Show your school pride by joining the FHDC for this special football-themed event including a meet & greet with KSU alumnus Veryl Switzer, the first African American to play for the Green Bay Packers, and other local football celebrities. Jordy Nelson memorabilia will be on display in the Football exhibition on this date only. Discounted admission is available with current student ID. Preschoolers in the Flint Hills: Football Fun (ages 4-5)
Time: 1:00pm - 2:00pm

The football season may be over, but football fun is just beginning with this session of Preschoolers in the Flint Hills!  Join FHDC staff in learning about the fun ways to pass like a quarterback, catch like a receiver, sidestep like a running back, and cheer for all the football players.

Preschool-age children begin discovering the wonder of the Flint Hills where they live, but look beyond the city limits in their exploration. Children further their sense of place and belonging to this region through interactions with the ecology and the history of the area. Pre-registration required. Adventure Camp: Body Conditioning for Football
Time: 8:00am - 5:00pm

Do you know what it takes to be a football player?  Learn first hand what football players have to go through to play the game.  We will look into what food you should eat and the exercises you should do to be the best football player possible!

Footsteps in the Flint Hills: Football Science (ages 6-8)
Time: 10:00am - 12:00pm

There’s more to football than brute strength.  The angle of a kick, the tight spiral of a pass, the stance of a lineman and many more aspects of a play are only successful if science is applied.  Even the shape of a football is based on science.  Come to the FHDC for a unique Footsteps in the Flint Hills session to discover the science of football!

Explore the Flint Hills through a collection of guided experiences that examine wildlife and culture through time. Examine the unique adaptations that make the Flint Hills a perfect place for many animals, and engage in activities related to the tools, weapons and customs prevalent throughout the region, from 16,000 years ago through present day. Each week kids will explore a different aspect important to the Flint Hills, so enroll in one, two or all! All sessions will run from 10 a.m. to noon. There is a maximum of 12 children; minimum of 5. Preschoolers in the Flint Hills: Native Pottery (ages 4-5)
Time: 1:00pm - 2:00pm

Join the FHDC in learning the ways Native Americans made and used pottery every day.  Get your hands dirty and test your skills in designing your very own piece to take home this session.

Football: The Exhibit
Time: 10:00am - 5:00pm

In the second-floor gallery Jan. 18 - June 1.
Think you've got the skills to go pro? Football is a 3,000 sq. ft. exhibition that introduces visitors to the science, math and technology behind the game and how they relate to our everyday lives. Test your throwing skills in the Passing Cage area. Try to match the speed of an NFL running back. Learn the trajectory for kicking a field goal. This highly interactive exhibit relives all the excitement and experience of playing football while also revealing the science that makes it all possible. Dinner Theater
Time: 6:30pm - 9:00pm

 Go back in time with the Flint Hills Discovery Center to the year 1860 to meet with Mary Jane Ritchie. Mrs. Ritchie moved to Topeka in 1855 as an abolitionist and suffragist with her husband John Ritchie. Mrs. Ritchie, played by Anne Hawkins, will lead us through an unforgettable experience as we gather under the guise of prayer meeting, but our real intention is to learn more about the Underground Railroad. Dinner will be served family style with the menu as follows: fried chicken, creamy cole slaw, mashed potatoes, country style cream gravy, green beans with bacon and onion, homemade dinner rolls, and apple pie for dessert. Each registration includes a ticket for one glass of beer, wine, or soft drink with a cash bar available throughout the event. Catering will be provided by Bockers II Catering.

This event will include a cocktail reception starting at 6:30 p.m. Dinner will be served at 7 p.m., with Mrs. Ritchie joining us around 7:30 p.m.

Registration fee for FHDC members is $30 per person and $35 per person for non-members. Click here to register; deadline is Tuesday, February 25.
