Fred W. Goss • Director

Fred began his employment with the City of Manhattan’s Parks and Recreation Department on May 2, 2013 and is responsible for the daily operations of the FHDC and supervision of its staff in addition to assuring that the FHDC objectives of tourism attraction, education, and recreation are carried out at the highest professional standards. Fred also serves as the liaison to the FHDC Foundation and its board, the FHDC’s Advisory Board, in addition to serving regional stakeholders, and the general public. He has held several positions including that of Consultant with the Cultural Resource Management Group; Director of the Greensboro Historical Museum in Greensboro, NC and Chief Executive Officer of the Stuhr Museum in Grand Island, Nebraska. His career path provided him with the opportunity to work in the positions of Assistant Director, Interim Director and Graduate Student Internship/Farm Manager at Old Cowtown Museum, Wichita, KS and a interpretation supervisor at Living History Farms in Urbandale, IA. Goss holds a MA in Historic Administration from Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, IL and a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Fred is a Great Plains Native and is continuing to learn about the greater Manhattan community.
Jerri Hager • Development Officer

Jerri is responsible for development and membership activities for the Discovery Center including supervision of outreach, marketing and event sales staff. An Atlanta native, Jerri moved to Kansas from Brunswick, Georgia where she served as the Public Relations Director with the Coastal Georgia Historical Society. Her previous work as the society's Development Director included coordinating and implementing a five-year, $5.5 million dollar capital campaign. Jerri’s experience includes serving as the Director of Continuing Education at Clayton State University in Morrow, Georgia. She also has extensive experience in event management and holds a Bachelor of Science in Integrative Studies from Clayton State University.
Susan Adams • Volunteer/Visitor Services Manager

Susan is responsible for both a dynamic volunteer program and excellent customer service here at the Flint Hills Discovery Center. Susan handles recruitment, training and supervision of the more than 100 volunteers who support programs and activities. She also manages all aspects of customer service. Previously, Susan worked for Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan as the Director of Volunteer/Guest Services for more than five years. Susan holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Leisure Management from Missouri Western State College in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Roy Garrett • Exhibits/Operations Manager

Roy Garrett serves as manager for the 10,000 square feet of permanent exhibits on display at the facility. He supervises building operations and is responsible for the implementation and development of engaging temporary exhibits. Roy is a seasoned museum veteran, having worked for 15 years at the Corpus Christi Museum of Natural History. He is a Kansas State University alumnus and a proud parent.
Jared Bixby • Curator of Education

Jared serves as the Curator of Education at both Sunset Zoo and the Flint Hills Discovery Center. Jared is well-known for his knowledge, creativity and effectiveness as an educator in the areas of animal and natural sciences. He supervises a staff of education specialists, as well as volunteer interpreters, to ensure a rich and stimulating education program at the Flint Hills Discovery Center. Jared holds a Master of Science degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Emporia State Unviersity in Emporia, KS, and graduated from Kansas State University with a B.S. degree in Wildlife Biology.
Alishia Curtis • Marketing Coordinator

Alishia is responsible for marketing, publicity, and outreach efforts for the Discovery Center. Her most recent experience includes working as the director of public relations for Clear Passage Physical Therapy in Gainesville, Florida. She has worked as an online copywriter/editor for O & P Prosthetics, and as a freelance graphic designer and web developer. Alishia completed a public relations internship at the Sea Turtle Conservancy in Gainesbille, Florida, and graduated from the University of Florida in Gainesville with a B.S. in Public Relations.
Jonathan Mertz • Event Sales Coordinator

Jonathan is responsible for facility rentals at the FHDC and assist in all event needs, from hosting a small group meeting to planning a dream wedding. A graduate of Wamego High School and then Kansas State University, he is the fourth generation of his family to live in the Flint Hills. After working for several years for non-profit organizations in Washington, DC, he is excited to be back in Kansas.
Travis Young • Education Specialist - History/Culture

One of two Education Specialists tasked with assisting the Curator of Education, Travis develops educational programs with a historical and cultural focus, as well as coordinating with volunteers to ensure accurate delivery of information to guests. Born and raised in Missouri, Travis was a high school history teacher before enlisting in the Army. He has resided in the Manhattan/Fort Riley area since 2004, except for two years during his military duties. He previously worked as a substitute teacher in the Flint Hills area and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Science Education from Central Methodist University in Fayette, Missouri.
Caitlin Luttjohann • Education Specialist - Science

Caitlin, one of two Education Specialists, plans and implements education programs with a focus on science and technology. Prior to joining the FHDC staff, Caitlin worked for USD 383 for 4 years as Northview Elementary’s Before and After School Supervisor where she helped Northview start a summer camp program. She is a graduate of Kansas State University with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering and is an avid hockey fan. Her diverse skills and engineering background bring a unique perspective to the FHDC team.
Penny Cullers • Gift Store Coordinator

Penny is responsible for the purchasing of new products, inventory accountability and sales at the Gift Store. She previously worked for fifteen years as a manager and buyer for Varney’s Book Store here in Manhattan, and brings her retail experience along with her love of the Flint Hills to assist in the Gift Store’s success. Penny has a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts from Kansas State University.
