Tallgrass Tour Bus

Explore the Flint Hills and beyond with the Tallgrass Tour Bus! Join the Discovery Center as we embark on day trips to exciting locations in central Kansas. We will dive into the history, culture and natural beauty of our remarkable state. Trips leave from the Flint Hills Discovery Center. Round trip travel and tour fees are included. Participants are responsible for lunch fee. Youth under 18 must be accompanied by adult.

Historic Trails

Saturday, March 4, 8:45am-4:30pm
The Tallgrass Tour Bus is off to Marysville where we will visit the Pony Express Barn and Museum. Then we will have lunch at Las Cabanas located in an historic house. After lunch, we will head to Alcove Springs along the Oregon Trail. Here we will see carvings in the stones left by wagon train visitors that stopped here to rest and swim on their long journey West. Our last stop is Blue Rapids where we will experience one of the Wonders of Kansas!

We will experience the sites of the earliest travelers through our area. We will hear of the perils they faced. Participants will uncover more about how communication occurred in the days before phone lines and televisions and computers.

Round trip travel and tour fees are provided.  Participants are responsible for lunch fee.  Youth under 18 must be accompanied by adult. Tour leaves the Flint Hills Discovery Center at 8:45am and returns no later than 4:30pm.  

Registration is required by March 3.

Scenic Chase County

Saturday, May 6, 9am-5pm
Join us for a scenic day trip to the heart of the Kansas Flint Hills.  The Tallgrass Tour Bus takes you south from Manhattan to the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve where you will be treated to a guided tour of the Bison pastures as well as the Spring Hill Ranch headquarters.  Midway along our journey we will dine for lunch at Ad Astra, known regionally for its fine food.   Our final stop will include a private tour of the Chase County Courthouse in Cottonwood Falls, where we will explore its unique history and construction.

Round trip travel and tour fees are provided.  Participants are responsible for lunch fee.  Youth under 18 must be accompanied by adult. Tour leaves the Flint Hills Discovery Center at 9:00am and returns no later than 5:00pm.  

Registration is required by May 5.

Greater Prairie-Chicken Booming

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to visit a Greater Prairie-Chicken booming ground at the height of the booming season. You will witness the majestic ballet of the Greater Prairie-Chicken as they dance for dominance. FHDC staff will accompany you on your trip and provide all the insight you need. 

Price includes group transportation to the booming ground from the Discovery Center and complimentary breakfast. Limited to 7 participants per trip. Open to ages 16+.  Ages 10-15 may be accompanied by an adult. Preregistration is required.
